Abstract

Health and social care as a profession has one of the highest rates of non-fatal injury to the staff. Health and social care staff receive mandatory training every eighteen to twenty four months. The study sought to identify the movitational factors for adult learner in a mandatory setting. Data was gathered through focus groups and semi-structured interviews. The results found that adult have intrinsic and extrinsic motivation in the mandatory training setting which is affected by a number of factors. The findings indicated that the mandatory nature of training does not affect the motivation of social and health care workers in manual and patient handling training. A framework for the promotion of adult motivation was built based on the findings. Recommendations have been suggested for future manual and patient handling training for social and health care workers
