Abstract
The aim of this study is to explore gender equality in the legal profession and the structural and cultural barriers that inhibit female progression in the profession. As described by Bohnet (2016, cited in Cecchi-Dimeglio, 2018), gender is immersed in the structure of organisations and most current organisational designs in the legal profession make it difficult for women to rise to positions od leadership.
This study was conducted through semi-structured interviews with trainee solicitors both male and female, working in large corporate firms in Ireland to get their perspectives on the role gender plays in the legal profession and what barriers they see to their own progression in the sector and the influence gender may have on those barriers.
The study concluded that while huge strides have made in recent decades to achieve gender equality in the legal profession, there still remains a vast amount of work to be done to achieve actual equality, whereby women are equally represented at every level of the profession.
