Abstract

The ParentChild+ Programme is an evidence-based, innovative early childhood home-based literacy and parenting programme that strengthens families and prepares children to succeed academically. Operating in Dublin’s Inner City for 15 years, a study was conducted to evaluate the long-term impact and provide insight into the experiences and progression of programme graduates and to identify any recommendations to further support children and families. The research became an in-depth, qualitative, case study of 13 parent and child graduates of the programme and 2 teachers. The findings indicated the continued positive impact of the ParentChild+ programme for children and parents. However, challenges arose in the recruitment process, particularly in contacting vulnerable families in an area with high rates of homelessness and temporary accommodation. The timing of the research also posed challenges when contacting schools and families, as COVID-19 interrupted and influenced the original working plan for the study. While the report recommends that evaluation tools be developed for long-term, sustained, data collection, an exploration of how community action research can be embedded in such structures is greatly needed. As we live in a time of constant crises, long-term research methods must take the unforeseen into account. This workshop will explore how children and families can be meaningfully involved in longitudinal research and what research and people related resources are needed to sustain their involvement over prolonged periods and in the face of adversity.
