Abstract

The purpose of the following report is to outline the research and development process of the check-mate web application. The subject area is mental health, in particular emotional intelligence and self-reflection. The research conducted provides support to the value and reasoning behind the development efforts.

The aim is to provide people with a modern solution that helps them get back in check with themselves and become more aware of their mental health and wellbeing. The digital journal feature developed as a result of the development, offers users a dedicated space to log and review their daily experiences. This simple tool is designed to enable users to gradually build a consistent routine of self-reflection. Communication is the other fundamental aspect of building a pro-active mentality towards mental health and this drove the requirement for the topic based chat feature. Users are provided with real-time communication in chat rooms that are dedicated to specific topics of importance in the area of mental health. This is a vital service for users who are seeking advice or looking for support in times of distress.

A potential improvement planned for the solution is to develop a counselling system where approved medical professionals can register with check-mate and provide counselling services on a 1-to-1 basis with users of the application. This is modern approach to counselling that makes mental health services more accessible to a wider demographic. This would also monetize the project which would provide stimulus for future development in this area.
