Abstract

Future wireless networks increasingly face correlated failures where redundancy alone becomes brittle, motivating a shift from identical backups to degenerate alternatives that can take over via different implementations. This work introduces the first-ever degeneracy-aware robustness framework for heterogeneous wireless systems, formalizing when structurally different components deliver functionally equivalent service. We lift degeneracy into two operational metrics, Degeneracy-Weighted Path Robustness (DWPR) and Algorithmic Resilience Quotient (ARQ), spanning path-level and algorithm-level robustness in heterogeneous wireless systems. Numerical results under jamming, zero-day exploits, domain drift, and cross-layer shocks demonstrate clear robustness gains and graceful degradation compared with redundancy-only designs. With DWPR it is possible to sustain > 80% connectivity while baselines drop below 20% under mode-targeted jamming, while ARQ retains ~0.55 accuracy at maximal domain shift.
