Abstract

The number of individuals who suffer from celiacs disease in Ireland have a hard time adapting to their disease when first diagnosed. It is estimated that there are 50,000 people living in Ireland with celiacs disease and there is a further 400,000 who are gluten intolerant. (Coeliac Society Of Ireland, 2021)

More broadly worldwide the amount of celiacs being diagnosed in recent years has increased by 7.5%. It is estimated that 1.4% of the worldwide population spanning South America, North America, Africa, Asia, and Europe are affected by celiacs disease. When converted from percentages to population size this means 11 million of the world’s 7.6 billion population size has the disease. (The Institute for Functional Medicine, 2021)

Celiacs have no clear-cut rules or guidelines to help them when eating out or shopping for themselves or family. Some food products packing has a clear and easy to see gluten free logo or stamp. However, many food brands are gluten free but are missing the stamp. Or some food products one year could be gluten free, but the following year contain gluten. This makes the process of shopping even harder for celiacs.

In 2020, many people of all age demographics have access to or personally own an Android device. With this I hope to create a solution to the problem many celiacs face daily using an Android Application.

Through using machine learning and the use of a natural language processor I want to offer a food packet scanner that can scan the ingredients section of packet which is not always easy to comprehend because of small text, or because certain ingredient names are puzzling to most people.

This captured information would then be passed into the natural language processor and this will make the data more useful to the end user by highlighting or flagging dangerous ingredients that are toxic to celiacs.

In addition to the packet scanner, I want to include a restaurant review system that will allow my users create new reviews, read existing reviews, update an existing owned review, and delate an existing owned review.
