The landscape is changing for higher education globally with many institutions investigating the introduction of blended and online learning strategies to support the diverse candidate population. The Flip-classroom is seen as a pedagogic shift to ensure that any classroom engagement will cultivate an active learning experience for the students, where the traditional passive lecture is delivered online. This paper is focused on investigating the effects of increasing the number of digital resources into a first year Computer Architecture module, over a period of four years at the National College of Ireland and the impact that these additional resources have had on retention. The pedagogic strategy adopted in the module over the past four years has been to create a hybrid approach of passive and active learning, ensuring that learners get an opportunity to practice some of the practical elements within the lecture time. During the final year of the experiment a new assessment strategy was introduced to support a strategy of assessment for learning moving away from traditional time bounded individual exams. Additionally the paper evaluates the impact of moving towards a flip-classroom on the students’ social life to determine an appropriate pedagogic strategy to take advantage of available technology.
