Abstract

Mnay large organisations have invested in knowledge management databases and learning management systems, however the evidence suggests that the former do not fully interact with the latter. Knowledge management systems are therefore not being fully exploited, and tend to become static, one way communication vehicles that lack practical use.
Things could be improved if the people managing the databases and the people managing the learning systems collaborated more on integrating the two.
Modern learning management systems are designed to integrate with other systems, such as human resource systems. Therefore this research is focussed on how knowledge management systems are currently used to support learning and to confirm any reasons that could be preventing the two systems interacting.
A number of academic research databases, professional journals and texts have been accessed to determine the relationship between the two areas, and how knowledge management systems are evaluated.
The analysis of the available literature has enabled a methodology to optimise the use of knowledge management systems to support organisational learning, and in particular, the development of e-learning strategies. One example is attempts to close identified knowledge gaps with the direct promotion of blended learning solutions, such as online training programmes.
The main scope of this report is a comprehensive literature review that aims to look at the methodology objectively.
