Abstract

In order to appreciate the significance of the issue of carers of the elderly estimates of the size of the 75+ population and its share of the total population are given in chapter 1. The household characteristics of those in the 65+ age group are described as such information is not readily available for the 75+ population. A comprehensive account of the health and dependency of the 75+ population is not available; however, information on the medico-social status of residents in long stay geriatric units is presented in 1.2. An overview of available health and welfare services available to the elderly is given in 1.3. In 1.4 some general trends affecting family structure are described; these include geographical mobility, a reduction in family size, the increase in the participation rates of women in the labour force and finally, arising from this, the increase in the opportunity cost of informal care.
