Abstract
Attention is being focused more and more on the voluntary and community sector in Ireland - its role in local development and in service provision, its significance in the area of anti-poverty action and its importance in the growth of Irish society as a whole. Such interest, however, runs the risk of mere platitude if it is not supported by substantial evidence of the sector's value and worth. Lack of information on the sector has been a factor in debates on the sector up until recently, and much research to date on the voluntary sector has been issue focused, applied, or prescribed as responses to specific questions. In order to address this fundamental gap in our knowledge of the sector the opportunity was taken to map the Irish nonprofit sector in a systematic, solid and empirical way through the Johns Hopkins Comparative Nonprofit Sector Project (CNP).
