Abstract
Open data repositories, such as Zenodo, Figshare and the Open Science Framework (OSF) provide a great deal of metadata about datasets, software and research artefacts, but all repositories have their own schema, nomenclature and extent of semantic expressiveness, thus creating interoperability divides, so that machines will not treat similar concepts as similar and do not help discover, integrate and re-use across repositories. It is a project, which constructs a semantic metadata integration platform from which data are harvested in Zenodo, Figshare, and OSF and converted to a single DataCite based schema and enhanced by matching them to existing ontologies like schema.org, DCAT, Dublin core Terms, and the DataCite ontology. The harmonised metadata is made in RDF knowledge graph form having ontology based reasoning layer and is able to deduce some additional relationships such as finding hierarchical subjects and related resources. To determine and quantitatively measure FAIRness before and after enrichment, FAIR-Checker is employed. Results indicate that the statistical significance of the differences in the interoperability and reusability scores is established proving the fact that ontology-based enrichment and RDF representation is a powerful motor to help in making research metadata machine-actionable. The suggested workflow is modular, repository independent extensional offering a non-specific model of large-scale semantic integration between open science ecosystems.
