Abstract

The rapid growth of cloud-based web applications has been increased concerns regarding secure data transmission, key management and system performance under concurrent type of workloads. There are some traditional encryption approaches which prioritise either strong security or high performance by resulting in trade-offs that are unsuitable for dynamic cloud environments. This study addresses the need for a balanced, scalable and secure encryption framework capable of operating in cloud-native architectures. To solve this problem there is a Pretty Good Privacy (PGP) inspired hybrid encryption system which was designed and implemented using Elliptic Curve Diffie–Hellman (X25519) for secure session key exchange and symmetric encryption with AES-GCM, DES included for legacy comparison. The system has been deployed as a stateless web application on AWS. Concurrent workload evaluation has been conducted with the help of Locust to simulate real-world cloud usage. Experimental results shows that the AES-GCM consistently outperformed DES in terms of latency.
