Abstract

Access Control in Cloud computing Systems or Services is managed by using a Centralized Identity and Access Management System, such as an IAM Service Providers, resulting in one Point of Failure, or Trust. In this paper We have developed the Decentralized Access Control System based on the Blockchain Model and FROST (Flexible Round Optimized Schnorr Threshold Signatures) to provide Distributed, or Tamper Proof, Cloud Resource Authorization through Decentralized Smart Contracts enforced by the Blockchain Network established on the Ethereum Blockchain Platform, for Policy Enforcement and Threshold Cryptography, in the absence of Point of Compromise for Single Users or Organizations. To measure the effect of 3 Authorization Modes on Latency and Gas Cost for Transactions throughout a Blockchain, we evaluated 3 Modes: 1) Blockchain Primary Mode is Fully Decentralized, 2) Hybrid Authorization Mode uses Multiple Authentication Factors to Combine the use of Blockchain and Cloud Identity Provider (IAM), 3) Cloud-Only Mode uses Centralized IAM. The results show that the Blockchain Primary Mode provides an Average Authorization Latency of 3.07 seconds, with Average Gas Cost for Transactions of less than 100,000 Gas per Transaction, while providing an even greater level of security and audibility (i.e., Immutability, Transparency, and Decentralization). The results also show that the Hybrid Authorization Mode provides a Satisfactory Balance of Security and Performance. The Results of this research support the viability of using a Blockchain for Cloud Access Control within Production Environments and Will have Implications for Zero Trust Technologies and Decentralized Identity Management in future Applications. Lastly we have Provided a Complete Open-Source version and Comprehensive Evaluation of the Decentralized Access Control System, providing a New Contribution to the State of the Art in Cloud Security.
