Abstract

Aim: The present study sought to provide a greater understanding of the effects of social media usage on body satisfaction and self esteem in muslim females within an irish context. Previous research has shown that increased social media usage is significantly correlated with decreased levels of body satisfaction and self esteem. The present study sought to expand on previous literature by investigating the impact on muslim females compared to non-muslim females, due to the gap in literature. Method: Three questionnaires were administered to the participants (n=187) through social media, which consisted of The Body Esteem Scale, The Rosenbery Self-Esteem Scale, and The Perceived Discrimination Scale. Results: Results of a standard multiple regression analysis showed that higher social media usage was significantly associated with lower levels of self esteem and body satisfaction. Follow up independent t-tests showed that muslim females scored lower than non-muslim females in self esteem and body satisfaction. Conclusion: Findings further illustrate the detrimental effects of excessive social media use supporting a large body of research. Although, this study challenges previous research, in that veiled muslim females experience lower levels of self esteem and are generally more dissatisfied with their bodies. Findings have important implications from a societal and personal level which are discussed. Also note when referring to muslim women throughout the study we are referring to “veiled” muslim women.
