Abstract

Ethnographic interviews and observations were conducted on 60 disadvantaged 6-12 year olds with respect to their unorganized group play activities, with a focus on social skills. Leadership, altruism and interpersonal conflict management occurred, producing evidence for learning occurring through play. Age and physical strength were criteria for choosing leaders. Helping, sharing, consoling and sympathizing were the altruistic behaviours expressed. Conflicts expressed were verbal essentially and were managed through dominance, reasoning or compromise. Clear age and gender differences were evident in the nature of expression of altruistic behaviour and conflict management.
