Abstract

Drawing on survey evidence, this paper shows that change at unionised workplaces in the UK has been piecemeal rather than implemented as coherent strategies, and has been directed towards the intensification of work rather than the introduction of systems intended to empower workers. While there are sectoral differences in the pattern of workplace change, the intensification of work is shown to be central to the pursuit of workplace grievances which do not suggest the emergence of a 'social partnership' at workplace level. Instead managerial attitudes are shown to be the central source of workplace grievances.
