Abstract

Cost optimization has always been a keen interest for cloud computing studies. The cost implications in cloud computing vary with respect to usage, resource utilization, maintenance, effectiveness, and quality of services. With the cloud centered around all software implementations in current times, the possibilities to optimize costs is a challenge and a research opportunity. Workflow scheduling is key to managing cost optimization. The scheduling offers variability in costs affected by input/output operations, storage requirements, and data transfer substantially. The existing optimization algorithms are based on analytics in aforesaid attributes and resource provisioning mechanisms. A holistic optimization algorithm must also take system architecture, QoS parameters, and service provider profitability into consideration. This creates a positive way to narrow down the research to key attributes of costs along with other cloud optimization strategies to make a composite view of cloud economics.

This chapter explores scheduling, estimation, and scalability in the cloud to subsidize costs and represent them in the SLAs fairly. Also, it provides a concise overview of cloud economics and the function of SLAs within the context of imposed limitations. A comprehensive enumeration and justification of cost optimization techniques is presented. Practice and research will surely benefit from the findings on the cost optimization methods and attributes in a cloud. An efficient decision-making strategy is finally proposed for cost optimization and SLA improvement.
