Abstract

The Zinc Finger Protein 804A gene (ZNF804A) has been impli-
cated as a psychosis/schizophrenia susceptibility gene by several genome wide association studies (Sullivan et al, 2008; O Donovan et al, 2008; Shi et al, 2009; International Schizophrenia Consortium et al, 2009). The identified
“A” risk allele at ZNF804A rs1344706 was not associated with variation in cognitive function in independent samples of patients and controls (Walters et al, 2010). It has been associated with poorer social cognitive function in an fMRI study of theory of mind in healthy controls by Walter et al (2010).

METHODS: The present study tested whether the same risk allele at ZNF804A was associated with variation on behavioural measures of social cognition in both patients with schizophrenia and healthy controls. These tasks consisted of measures of theory of mind (The Hinting Task and the Reading the eyes in the mind task) and attributional style (the Internal, Personal and Situational Attributions Questionnaire (IPSAQ)). Participants
comprised 313 DSM-IV diagnosed psychotic patients, and 126 unrelated healthy controls, all of Irish nationality, grouped according to ZNF804A genotype(AAvsACvsCC).
