This paper is the result of collaboration between a company involved in mobile media and an academic institution. 1.6 billion mobile phones are in use throughout the world today. If these can be successfully harnessed towards learning, major educational benefits will accrue. To this end a virtual learning environment (Claroline) was adapted for mobile access, and this paper outlines the work involved in the adaptation and the technical constraints which were overcome. Some conclusions are discussed and some future research work is outlined.
