This paper examines the use and application of Digital Libraries (DL) in an educational domain. In particular it takes a fresh and much needed look at a number of user related issues. Key issues addressed include quality of content offered by many DLs, as well as accessibility by non-IT users. The authors investigate how these reviews are carried out and how comparisons are made, along with the metrics used and how they are measured? A core component of this paper is to capture real life end-users experiences of using DLs, by visiting educational institutes and conducting survey-based research. The experience of the end user is evaluated and categorised against specific & clearly defined usability goals (i.e. easy to use? easy to remember?). Overall, the success of DLs will be assessed and how they weigh up compared to conventional means. Essentially, this paper investigates the awareness, the role and the future of DLs within an educational context.
