Abstract

The Zoom Ahead with Books project is designed to encourage parental involvement and promote children’s enjoyment and motivation to read for pleasure. This study assesses the impact of storybook reading in the home environment, and measures its efficacy in increasing children’s enthusiasm for reading. Literature to date focuses mainly on parental involvement and literacy development. While these are tremendously important, other studies have shown that interactions between parents and children can create nurturing relationships which promote brain development, literacy and language development. This research focuses on developing nurturing relationships through reading.

Qualitative interviews were conducted with 12 parents/guardians and 12 children in Dublin’s Docklands. It has been found that frequency of storybook reading with parents/guardians is related to children’s enthusiasm and motivation for reading. It is also connected to improved bonding between parents/guardians and children. These results suggest the need for further study focusing on child/parent bonding through reading.
