Abstract

Adaptive Educational Hypermedia Systems (AEHS) represent an alternative to the traditional e-learning environments where the same content is delivered to each learner. These systems personalise and adapt the educational content and other aspects of the e-learning environment in order to match learner’s knowledge, goals, preferences, skills, etc and to improve the Quality of Experience (QoE). The research presented in this paper combines considerations of social connectedness with motivation and Adaptive Educational Hypermedia. For bringing together social connectedness and adaptivity we introduce a social interaction component to the architecture of the AEHS. The component enables awareness of online presence of learners working outside the learning system and continuous social interaction. It connects learning and online presence. Learners use tools of their choice that they are already familiar with.
