This article discusses the application of data protection principles in the internet age, in the context of the right to protection of personal data under the Treaty of the European Union art.8 and the EU Commission review of data protection. Outlines the Commission's proposals, including strengthening individual rights, and notes the importance of data protection to the Single Market. Considers data sharing for police and judicial purposes under the agreement with the US on air passenger data, and whether such data sharing is consistent with the Commission's principles.
